The oil you use not only defines the flavour of your dish, but also determines the life span of your Nutrigrill®. Staining and build up on cookware can be avoided by carefully choosing the right amount and type of oil when cooking your food.
How much oil do you need?
All you need is a small amount of butter or oil to keep the food from sticking on your pan. Add the fat on the cold surface before you turn on the heat. Note that your Nutrigrill® heats up to a high temperature in seconds. Allow your oil or butter to heat for a minute before adding your food to the surface.
Cooking with Minimum Oil
If you would like to use the least amount of oil in your dish as possible, try dabbing some oil on a paper towel and carefully wipe the towel all over the cooking surface.
You may also choose to explore alternative ways to cook food without fat, i.e. steaming, which is possible with the Nutrigrill® steamer attachment.
What to Avoid
Aerosol cooking sprays will leave tiny droplets of oil which will burn on Nutrigrill’s hot ceramic surface really fast, leaving a thin, carbonized residue. In addition, cooking sprays also contain emulsifiers like soy lecithin, and propellant agents like silicone. These layers will build up over time, stain your grill, and will become challenging to remove.
Instead of reaching for a cooking spray, use an oil mister. It does the job of distributing a thin layer of oil on your Nutrigrill® without the chemical additives in an aerosol spray.
As a general rule, be careful of cooking with unrefined oils. Unrefined oils such as extra virgin olive oil, sunflower oil, flaxseed oil, etc. tend to have lower smoke points – meaning, it doesn’t take a lot of heat for these oils to burn on your cooking surface. If you can, avoid oils with a low smoke point as it can carbonize quickly on your Nutrigrill®.
